You have to blow up every now and again:
I have and will talk a lot about balance and a sensible approach to Health and Fitness. There is no doubt though that there is a time to push and push hard. One of the core principles of CrossFit is high (or relative) intensity. There is no doubting that whilst you can't go to the limit every single day, you have to push hard, often, to get results.
A quote from an old friend always plays in my head:
'If you don't blow up every now and again you aren’t pushing yourself hard enough'
In this specific scenario we were talking about a particularly brutal training session where a couple of members of the squad had gone out big but had then blown up and limped over the line.
The message was simple, whilst you can't and shouldn't go so big that you struggle to get over the line all the time, how do you really test your limits unless every now and again you push yourself beyond what you know you can do. So embrace the failure when it happens, learn from it, use it to set targets and use it as motivation to improve going forward.
My message is simple. One of CrossFit's key ingredients is intensity, doing that properly means that at some point you are going to blow up, you're meant to… finish the workout, support others going through it in a class and come back to go again having learned from it!
