The Forgotten Part of CrossFit

The Forgotten Part of CrossFit - Learning New Sports

I was re-reading the CrossFit Level 1 guide recently and something stood out to me that doesn't really get talked about that often within the CrossFit space….

'Regularly Learn and Play New Sports'.

Before I start this isn't a criticism of Affiliates or Affiliate owners, putting on high quality classes and sessions (alongside the day to day of running a business in difficult economic climates) is challenging enough.

At the Elite level, I get it, CrossFit is your sport, and playing rugby, going skiing or taking time out to learn how to kite surf probably doesn't feel like a good use of time (although I would argue getting out of the gym and doing things you don't know is in fact one of the only ways to prepare for the unknown and unknowable). But for your casual athlete and member of the community there is real value in it. How rugby will smash your metabolic conditioning, wake boarding your balance, strength, coordination and accuracy or climbing will help your strength, accuracy and so on and so on.

Not only is there the physical benefit but the community benefit of playing team sports can also be huge, getting out the gym and out of the normal environment, challenging team work in different ways (again how could any competitive team not benefit from this when preparing for the unknown and unknowable).

Those are only some of the benefits, there are lots, lots more but essentially the message is this, embrace the opportunity to try new sports when it comes along, it's part of CrossFits DNA and purpose. That Summer rugby 7's tournament? Great. A surf lesson on holiday? Go for it. Volleyball session on the beach while the BBQ's warming up? Fantastic. A day in the mountains or out on the lake with friends? Sign me up and see you out there!
