Keep Getting It Done (Even If It Is Just A Little Bit Done!)
In an ideal world I would get to the gym everyday, probably twice a day, have loads of time to workout and then also focus on my recovery. Unfortunately my bank account doesn't allow me to. From a coaching perspective how often do we hear that people 'I didn't have time to train? The reality is, for many of us, things do come up. I have said it time and time again, the majority of us are not elite athletes or in a position where our days can be focused around our fitness goals. BUT….
On the theme of last weeks post, what if we focused on what we can do rather than what we don't have time for? Yea it can be frustrating when we can't fit in what we planned but that doesn't mean we have to write everything off does it? I was about to type how that, that is the beauty of intensity; and that is true, if you don't have a lot of time, a short does of intensity is great. It's why one of CrossFit's fundamental components is relative intensity (and a lot of the time, that is high intensity, but not to be confused with always being high intensity). That is also what I would preach here, it doesn't have to be crazy high intensity, especially if you are really squeezed for time and have no chance to warm up at all or you think that, that will overload you. It has to be relative to you, on that day, for the time and energy that you have to give. For example doing 10 x 1 min flat out sprints on the rowing machine with no warm up isn't wise. Let's look at some things that could work if you have limited time though:
No Equipment Or In a Hotel Room? - 100 Squats, 50 Press Ups, 50 Lunges, 50 Tricep dips
Needing a break from work and the sun is out? - 20 min brisk walk
Cold, wet and windy outside, feeling sore? A YouTube Yoga session
Got a Barbell and a rack in the Garage? - EMOM10 5 Squats or 5 Bench at 75%ish 1RM or a number of pull ups that works for you
Childcare plans fall through? - 20 minutes of tag with the kids
The point here is simple. Yea it is perfectly reasonable to say that life got in the way, it happens. But that doesn't mean that everything gets thrown into the bin. Focus on what you could do, even if it is small. Any Fitness is Good Fitness In the Grand Scheme Of Things and once you get into the habit of doing something, even when you don't have time, it's something that will help you keep moving for the long term.
