Is Easter a better time for a New Years Resolution In The Northern Hemisphere? (Spoiler - it absolutely is!)
To all of you who started a New Years Resolution on January 1st and have stuck to it, I have a huge amount of respect for you. I have written before about how January is one of the hardest times of year to change habits of a lifetime and aim to embed them for the long term.
Easter however, now that is a different story…
Maybe it's an exercise habit you want to start. Both the mornings and evenings are a bit lighter, it's getting warmer (but not yet too warm!), the gyms are a touch quieter than they were in January and in general it is just a bit easier psychologically to get started. If it's just movement you are looking for it's much easier to motivate yourself to get outside and go for a walk, run or cycle. The outside fitness classes feel a lot nicer and you are much more likely to be able to do things outside consistently now than you have been so far this year. Maybe you need people to do it with… Run clubs will be thriving now and CrossFit Gym communities will always be welcoming so there are two very viable options.
Perhaps you want to improve your nutrition. Local fruit and vegetables are back in the stores and tasting as fresh as ever. Picnic season with fresh food is back and even BBQ's (with decent meat) are a protein filled way to enjoy an evening. I appreciate that Easter is chocolate filled so maybe it's easter Monday or just after you start! But still it's going to be more appetising to eat a salad when you are not searching for a meal that is going to warm you up.
And you know what, it's also much easier to bring people on that journey with you this time of year… maybe it's just going out for a walk with friends, an open water swim in the sun or a cycle along a river bank to a café a couple of towns along for a coffee.
The possibilities are endless and lets be honest, most of them are going to be significantly more enjoyable to start during the spring than they are in the darkest, coldest months of winter. So the message is actually really simple… get out there and enjoy the sun and fresh air, it can literally change your life for the better.
If you feel like you need some help embedding some of those healthy habits then give me a shout!
Andy
