Have easy things on your to do list
In my last post I talked about how building habits takes time and how building them sustainably is the way forward. There's that old clip that does the rounds every now and again highlighting the quote from the famous Admiral McRavan speech where he says
'If you make your bed everyday, you will have accomplished the first task of the day'.
Now I'm not here saying that making the bed everyday is the key to every success that we have ever wanted. What I am saying though is that success is a great motivator and that success doesn't have to be huge. Take a personal example, I have 'CrossFit', 'Walk the dog' and 'The Breakfast I have on my meal plan' on my to do list everyday. I go to the 6am class so it's the first thing I do, I walk the dog when I get home and then have breakfast before I start work. That means that when I sit down and look at the to do list for the day I have already ticked off a chunk of things, I have won the morning and can attack the rest of the day knowing that I am already succeeding. Importantly if my day goes off the rails from there, there is no way that I haven't accomplished anything.
So the thought here is simple, have a to do list and put the smallest of habits or things that you do everyday that are important and set you up for success on there. It's going to help you hold yourself to account and helps to engrain the habit into your routine. If there is the option to set ourselves up for success right at the start of the day then we should take it. Progress and accomplishing the things that set you up for success is fantastic daily motivation. When inevitably the day comes where someone throws a spanner in the works and your day gets thrown upside-down then there are still things that you will tick off and make your day a success.
Put easy things on your to do list, it helps, try it!
