I Was Scared To Start

Picture this, it's January, early evening (which lets be honest in Scotland was cold and dark) and I am stood about 20 meters from the CrossFit gym contemplating not going in. Why? Because doing new things you know you are possibly going to be rubbish at is scary!

I had been living in Dundee for about 6 months and had met no one (up until this point I had still been working in London 2 - 3 days a week), I was active and knew I had a good sporting background but was coming off the back of an Achilles injury and knew that a lot of CrossFits standard movements would be beyond me. This was brand new territory for me.

After about 10 minutes of pacing backwards and forwards I walk in the door and I am immediately greeted by a coach (who is currently coaching a class), they had a beaming smile, welcomed me, putting me instantly at ease and told me where to hang out while this class finished. I watched from a balcony in absolute awe as people of all different abilities smashed this workout, the comradery, the effort and the community were clear to see. I loved that class, I learnt something new and met  great people.

Fast forward nearly 2 years and I have done countless WOD's, my Level 1 and am now coaching classes at that affiliate, still learning from the great people around me and trying to pay forward the support I was given when I first walked in and continue to receive.

The message is simple, it's scary to try new things and CrossFit is no different but everyone was in that boat once upon a time. Walking into a CrossFit gym (unless you get really unlucky!)  you will be greeted by friendly, welcoming people who will want you to have fun and succeed.

I would love to hear about your fears or barriers if you haven't started yet but have a nagging want to! Equally if you have started i'd love to hear about your experiences. Sounds off in the comments or drop me a message if you want to chat further.
